Beginning in 1991, the speed symbol denoting a
fixed maximum speed capability of new tires must be shown only in the speed
rating portion of the tire's service description, such as 225/50R16 89S. The
most common tire speed rating symbols, maximum speeds and typical applications
are shown below:

When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the
highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or
149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph,
how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive
industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs
of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.

While a Z-speed rating still often appears in the tire size designation of these tires, such as 225/50ZR16 91W, the Z in the size signifies a maximum speed capability in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h; the W in the service description indicates the tire's 168 mph, 270 km/h maximum speed.

Most recently, when the Y-speed rating indicated in a service description is enclosed in parentheses, such as 285/35ZR19 (99Y), the top speed of the tire has been tested in excess of 186 mph, 300 km/h indicated by the service description as shown below:

As vehicles have increased their top speeds into Autobahn-only ranges, the tire speed ratings have evolved to better identify the tires capability, allowing drivers to match the speed of their tires with the top speed of their vehicle.

Löytyy helpoiten auton rekisteriotteesta. Usein auton rekisteriotteessa on myös valmistajan hyväksymät vaihtoehtoiset rengaskoot. Rengaskokoa voi muuttaa suuremmaksi tiettyjen asetusten mukaisesti. Lisätietoja saat helpoiten ammattitaitoisesta rengasliikkeestä tai autosi merkkiliikkeestä. Mikäli valittu rengaskoko poikkeaa asetuksista on ajoneuvo aina muutoskatsastettava. Auton valmistaja on myös määritellyt renkaille nopeusluokan joka määräytyy auton huippunopeuden ja/tai auton alusta- ja ajonhallintajärjestelmien asettamien vaatimusten mukaisesti. Käyttämällä autonvalmistajan suunnittelemaa ja testaamaa nopeusluokkaa varmistat, että autosi ajokäyttäytyminen on johdonmukaista ja yllätyksetöntä kaikissa ajotilanteissa. Suomessa autoon saa asentaa näitä nopeusluokkia alhaisemman suorituskykyluokan renkaat, jos vaihdettavat renkaat ovat vähintään nopeusluokkaa Q (160km/h). Asetuksen mukaan tällöin on auton ohjaamoon kuljettajalle helposti näkyvään paikkaan kiinnitettävä pysyvästi kilpi tai tarra, josta selvästi ilmenee suurin sallittu renkaiden rajoittama ajonopeus. Käytännössä tätä asetusta ei olla valvottu. Asetus ei luonnollisestikaan koske talvirenkaita, koska Pohjoismaisen konseptin mukaan valmistetut nykyaikaiset, pehmeäseoksiset talvirenkaat ovat aina nopeusluokka Q tai T.

Gumilexikon: Felfújható abroncs szerkezet, amelyben a szövetszálak a köpenyperemig terjednek és 90°-nál kisebb váltószögeket zárnak be a futófelület koronavonalával.
Radiál szövetváz: Egy felfújható abroncs szerkezet amelyben a szövetkordok a köpenyperemig terjednek és 90°-os szöget zárnak be a futófelület koronavonalával ahol a szövetvázat egy kinyújthatatlan acélöv betét biztosítja.
Aquaplaning: Egy olyan jelenség, ahol az úton lévö vizet a futófelület már nem tudja kanalizálni illetve elvezetni. Ennek hatására az úttest és a gumiabroncs között egy olyan vízfilm keletkezik amelyen a gépkocsi elkezd siklani és kormányozhatatlanná válik (vízisí jelenség). Az okozója ennek a jelenségnek nem csak túl nagy sebesség ill. vízmennyiség lehet hanem elkopott futófelületek is! Idejében cseréljen gumiabroncsot!

Futási irány: Jó minöségü abroncsoknál nyíllal jelölt gördülési irány. A gumit csak ebbe az irányba lehet használni ill. felszerelni. Elöny: halkabb mint más típusú abroncsok, jobb tapadás és nagyobb biztonság aquaplaning ellen.
Karkasz: A gumiabroncs önhordó szerkezeti eleme. Ha ez a része sérül meg egy abroncsnak akkor az csak speciális esetben javítható, illet használható fel futózásra.
Lamellák: Finoman bevágott gumiblokkok a futófelületen amelyek mint tapadókorongok hatnak. Ezek a téligumikon találhatóak ahol a fékezésnél ill. gyorsításnál erösen emelik a kapaszkodást, tapadást.
